FIDM Student is Finalist for Supima Design Competition

FIDM Student Is Finalist for Supima Design Competition

FIDM Student Genevieve Lake is one of seven finalists in the 11th annual Supima Design Competition, which culminates with a runway show on September 6, 2018, at Pier 59, as part of New York Fashion Week, and was recently covered in Women's Wear Daily

Supima is the marketing brand for American-grown Pima cotton. The highly selective contest features top talent from American design schools. A panel of judges comprised of industry pros will announce the winning designer during New York Fashion Week. They will win a $10,000 cash prize, along with exposure to fashion executives, the press, and influencers.

Buxton Midyette, the vice president of marketing and promotions at Supima, told WWD, “Every year I think I’ve seen the best presentation yet, but I get surprised continuously. The finalists we have from the schools are amazing and they are bringing a whole new level of creativity to their collections, each one distinct, different, innovative. It’s going to be an incredible show in September.”

Genevieve (pictured, far right in left image), a Fashion Design Student at FIDM, is competing alongside Alanna Lizun of Kent State University; Bryn Lourié of Rhode Island School of Design; Jessica Chang of Parsons School of Design; Jessica Rubinstein of Savannah College of Art and Design; Lili Shi of The Fashion Institute of Technology, and Paula Amaral, Academy of Art University.

Each university assigns mentors to work with their finalist in addition to Supima's design mentor, CFDA Award-winning designer Bibhu Mohapatra (pictured above, fourth from left). The finalists are required to create five looks for each type of Supima fabric: shirting, knit, velveteen, twill, and denim. They will also design one evening wear look for each fabric, resulting in a five-look capsule collection.
